Malayalam Boogie

Filed under: All Podcasts, Indian Podcasts — Kellie @ 10:50 pm

T-bird Jim Samuel brings us a truly unique mix … Malayalam dance music. Not to be confused with the Malay language which is spoken in Malaysia, Malayalam is one of the 22 official languages of India. As Jim explains, these songs are “from a culture which gave birth to some of the most admired dance forms and music in India.”

And an odd piece of trivia about Malayalam… it is the longest language name in English which is a palindrome!

ThunderViews: An Interview With Dr. John Beck

Filed under: All Podcasts, ThunderViews — Kellie @ 7:27 am

Were you born in 1970 or later? Did you spend your childhood pumping quarters into Pac-Man or grasping a Game Boy for hours on end? Can you hum the theme song to Super Mario Brothers? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you might be a “gamer.”

In his book “Got Game,” T-bird professor John Beck shares the findings of his research on the Gamer Generation and the impact this group has upon business today. His studies have shown that those of us who grew up playing video games think and act differently in our business decisions than non-gamers. The implications are that non-gamers need to understand how to work with the gamer professionals in their organizations, and gamers need to understand why they might not fit within the traditional business work environment.

Dr. Beck sat down with Thunder Radio to discuss his research and share some thoughts on the Gamer Generation. It’s a fascinating interview, but to learn more about his book visit www.gotgamebook.com.

Introduction to the “Globality Index”

Filed under: All Podcasts, Cross Cultural Podcasts — Kellie @ 6:50 am

You’ve learned all about Hofstede and the GLOBE Study… you know all about ‘power distance’ and ‘individualism vs. collectivism’… perhaps you’ve even been exposed to Dr. Javidan’s research on the Global Mindset. But have you heard about “Globality?”

Doctors Smith and Jones (AKA - Archamp students Mike Miller and Kris Steward) and their subject (student Matthew Goldberg) take this opportunity to describe exactly what the Globality Index is and how you calculate your own rating. Things like speaking another language or having multiple passports gets you a higher index, while attributes like being American start your rating at zero (or lower)… but they do allow points for being from Texas since it is “almost like being in the United States.”
